Starting an Event Catering Service
When you fall under the title of Event Catering,
you have to be able to expect--and respond to--anything. For some, the
lack of a specialty may be too much. They need to have limits,
boundaries. There is nothing wrong with that, of course. More
specialized versions of catering services are needed to keep everyone
from having to master all events. It is a matter of practicality and
you understand that. This niche is for those who, while understanding that, want to
do more than one field. The ability to adapt and change must be
present, of course, and also the creativity to think in such broad
terms. There are fewer guidelines and you tend to take everything as it
comes.

We say this because some think that all forms of
catering are considered event catering. This is not true. For example,
a business that does only wedding receptions is not the same as your
idea of event catering. Just as a person who does only breakfast
specials or has a specific kind of food they excel at. This kind of
business is more of a general sort, one where you work everything from
weddings to socials to business parties and anything else.
Providing for this particular niche means being able to do whatever is
needed for the job. We explain this simply because people do get
confused and you do not need to enter a business you are not ready for.
And, sine you have to be so adaptable, being ready is essential.
This niche offers you a variety of choices: you can be working
any event possible. That does mean, though, that you have to have the
plans for them. That menu for the fourth of July barbecue certainly
won't work as a luncheon for business men. And that wedding you are
working on will not have the same complications as the family reunion
in the park you have to plan for. It is a matter of perspective. You will have to be able to adapt to each situation and make everything unique. Without that ability, your event catering business will not survive. You must be able to adapt. It is just that simple. Event
catering tends to cause some problems in terms of how to market it.
After all, it is easier to say "We only do wedding receptions" than "We
do everything". Or is it? In truth, you market your business the same
way other catering services do. You just highlight what you offer and,
since you have much more to offer than most, you can find an advantage
here.
While, yes, event catering can be more difficult to actually do,
it is certainly an easier thing to explain in print or other media
forms. You can catch much attention with all the options you provide.
Finding a customer base is never difficult.
If you thrive on doing one thing well, then event catering is
not for you. If you crave diversity and change, however, it is ideal.
Just be certain you are up to the task.
